P2SL-LCI-AIA
LEAN DESIGN FORUM 2018

UC Berkeley’s Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL), the Lean Construction Institute (LCI), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have been co-hosting the Lean Design Forum (with AIA offering continuing education credit) for many years now. The Forum meets twice a year, in Berkeley early in the year, and in the Midwest mid-year.

The 1.5-day 2018 Berkeley Forum will take place on Thursday (whole day) and Friday (morning only), 8 and 9 February 2018 as in previous years at the Hs Lordships Restaurant at the Berkeley marina.

We look forward to hearing terrific speakers share lessons learned, good discussion, and thank our event sponsors!

As in previous years, we are working with AIA so you may get continuing education credit for participating in this event.

AGENDA

THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2018

7:30 AM Registration and Breakfast

8:10 AM Session I: SOCIAL SCIENCE TOOLS FOR DISCOVERING TRUE CUSTOMER VALUES
Panelists from Taylor Design:

  • Jen Leonard, Director of Design Strategy
  • Eric Peabody, Senior Associate, Project Director, Architect
  • Nicole Rappin, Design Strategist
  • Rob Williamson, Project Director, Architect

Traditional Lean tools and techniques offer a great way of collecting explicit and quantitative customer values, however, it is often the implicit experiential customer values that truly drive decision making. Take coffee selection for example; customers describe their values in terms of taste and price, however, those same customers consistently choose Starbucks over McDonalds for coffee despite McDonalds superiority in both of those explicit customer values. Consumer decision making is actually being driven by experience values. The panel will explain how social science and design thinking techniques can be combined with lean methodologies to uncover those implicit but more powerful customer values at the early stage of the design process.

9:45 AM Coffee Break

10:15 AM Session II: EVIDENCE BASED DESIGN

  • Jenny Hastings, Boulder Associates
  • Romano Nickerson, Boulder Associates

Jenny Hastings and Romano Nickerson will chair a panel discussing how their company, Boulder Associates, is using evidence based design.

12:00 NOON Lunch

12:45 PM Session III: LESSONS FROM LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

  • Don Reinertsen, Reinertsen & Associates

Don will speak on what we in the design-and-construction industry can learn from product development. A teaser from his most recent book:

“Few developers realize that queues are the single most important cause of poor product development performance.”

2:30 PM Break

3:00 PM Session IV: MORE LESSONS

Don will share further lessons. Another teaser from his book:

“We cannot eliminate all variability without eliminating all value-added.”
