P2SL Megaprojects Leadership Initiative

Where: UC Berkeley (main campus)

Workshop setting: We are hosting this two-day workshop to focus on leadership practices and the development of leaders of megaprojects. Megaprojects—sometimes referred to as ‘international’ or ‘global’ projects—could be either private- or public projects, and in any industry sector (e.g., oil and gas, industrial construction, complex buildings, infrastructure).

Leadership is to align and nurture capabilities of the project delivery team with the demands on the project. Leaders should serve as a model for the desired behavior, enable what they are requesting (conditions, knowledge, resources, coaching and training), and maintain the team focus on goals and values (process and criteria).

This workshop wraps up the first year of our Laboratory’s research focused on megaproject leadership. P2SL’s Megaproject Leadership Initiative has been supported by Statoil as the founding member, and we have conducted our research in collaboration with colleagues at the Norwegian Technical University (NTNU).

Workshop aim: The aim of this workshop is to bring together industry practitioners and researchers eager to share their learnings on how to exercise and develop leadership, and interested in collaborating on further research and practical applications of lessons learned in this area.

Discussions at the workshop will pertain to any or all:

1.        the commercial terms,

2.        the organization, and

3.        the operating system

used to deliver projects. Speakers will present case studies and theoretical frameworks on which to base future studies and plan-do-check-act experimental applications.

Topics:

·   Lean Construction Leadership

·   Organizational Change Management

·   Leadership in Joint Ventures

·   Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs)

·   Project Alliancing

·   Education and Development of Leaders

·   Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

·   Models to Characterize and Analyze Megaprojects

Thursday 9 June and Friday 10 June 2011

LCI-P2SL Lean Design Forum

Join us for 2 days of in-depth dialogue on Lean design and construction philosophy and methodologies. Hear from national leaders in design and construction who have been implementing lean thinking and integrated project delivery methods specifically related to design and the participation of designers throughout the life of a project. Meeting format will include presentations, workshops, and question-and-answer periods.

Presentations:

1.  Todd Henderson from Boulder Associates to reprise Romano Nickerson's presentation to the NorCal COP on integrating lean into a design practice.

2.  Stacey Root, also from Boulder Associates reprising her presentation in Cincinnati last year on the team approach they took on the Van Ness California Medical Office Building.

3.  Kevin Kerschbaum of HGA discussing contemporaneous modeling of post-op and emergency care for Affinity in Wisconsin.

We'll be discussing the role of Lean principles in Design in the workshop on Friday. The purpose is to conduct a robust conversation in the community about design. However, we need to tap into our resources on this subject from around the country so we won't be developing a specific, adoptable document that defines or tries to define the role of lean principles in design. Structural engineers, Mechanical system designers, architects, city planners-all are important to a great diversity of ideas on how the creative process we call design is informed by lean principles.

Join us in the third of our 3-month series on lean organizational and leadership development with Bob DeKoch, President of Boldt Construction, leading a firm that is a very early adopter of lean for projects and for their company’s entire enterprise. Bob will add great depth to our leadership development discussing books like "Embracing Uncertainty" and will also give the group a peak under the tent on our second book, "Progress Makers" which will be published during this next year.
